


At the age of 20, she finds herself on a train to Tokyo with hopes of reuniting with her current boyfriend. Despite continually facing failure in her quest for love, her spirits have never dampened. Nana Komatsu is a naive, unmotivated girl who spends her high school days chasing one crush after the other. A deep and unique bond is then forged, where they will support each other in this saga of love, music, friendship, and heartbreak. The two girls with the same name but very different aspirations find themselves sitting together on their journey to the city, and, as fate would have it, eventually share the same apartment. On her 20th birthday, she boards the same train to Tokyo, like her namesake, where she aims to become a top vocalist. However, when faced with the choice between her relationship and her musical career, she chooses the latter and separates from her boyfriend. After joining a local band during her high school days, she falls in love with music and one of the band members. Nana Osaki, on the other hand, is feisty and prideful. Yazawa herself attended a fashion school after high school but did not complete her studies there. The characters are always very stylish, and she is known especially for her hip sense of fashion. The storylines generally are centered on young women and their relationships, something with which her young fanbase identifies. Yazawa's works are most popular among women and young girls. Some of her manga works were made into anime, and live action moves too.


In 2003, she was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award for Nana. Yazawa's most famous manga include Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm Not an Angel), Gokinjo Monogatari (Neighborhood Story), Paradise Kiss, and Nana. While most of her manga continues to be published in Japan by Shueisha, publishers of Ribon and Cookie (in which Nana is serialized), series like Paradise Kiss now appear in other magazines such as Zipper, published by Shodensha. Yazawa started her manga publishing life in 1985 throughout 15 years of publishing, she wrote over ten series on Ribon magazine. Her pen name comes from Japanese singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan. Ai YAZAWA ( 矢沢あい) is a Japanese manga author.
